I don't think that's the case at all.  This forum is comprised of techno-geeks that are enthusiasts and dealers.  I have to think that we are a very small minority of Control4 end-users.  Many of us wish we could do more with the system but we understand why Control4 has a dealer-model.  In order to do everything yourself you would have to be in the top 1% (or maybe top 0.1%) in terms or technology literacy to be able to confiure everything and troubleshoot why something goes wrong (like an IP address changed because a router rebooted or you changed type of router).
There are reasons why you may want to have other devices on the network for Control4, or at least have a way of crossing the network onto Control4.  For example, you may want to control a TV or an Audio-Video receiver with IP control, or you may want to use an Alexa device for voice control.
And I don't know why people are having a fit over $500.  Here in Toronto you can't get anyone to come to your house to do anything for less than $200, that includes a dishwasher repairman who taks 5 minutes to change a gasket.  The OP has a few thousand dollars worth of hardware.  It is going to take a bit of money to get things up and running.  But spending $500 to get several thousand dolalrs of equipment up and running is a good deal.

I'm not sure if there's a remote or a touch screen in your system but the app would be the only way to access it if you didn't have either.  The TV navigator can only be triggered with the remote.  The PC app only works if the controller has a site licence. The older controllers (HC250 or HC800) prior to April 2013 DID NOT come with a licence.  Licences were included with those controllers after that date and the model number reflected that with a "BL1" at the end of it.  It was either a one time purchase per account or it came included.
The previous owners of the system may have purchased the licence separately and it could transfer to you if they gave their account to you.  It's an email address and password.  It can be changed by the original owner only.
There's most likely a working project on the controller already so if you connected it to the network, it may be partially operational the way it is.

I have an hc250 With a license used for sale.  It’s posted in the for sale/wanted to buy forum.  I live in northern NJ too so shipping should be fairly quick and cheap

control4 will finally be geared toward the DIY type people and crestron will now be our high end dealer only model.

Thanks, I tried that. No luck.  After a few weeks...Local Dealer says they didn't do anything.
And then he told me "Sorry you can't access your system. Reset your password at control4.com"
WTF kind of advice is that? I can access my C4 user web account just fine. And I tried the password. Doesn't work.
This is my big mistake with this system choice--yeah it's much more reliable and robust than DIY...but when it does break or I want to make a change, I am at the mercy of a dealer.  They can charge me $1000 if they wanted to for a truck roll, and what could I do?  Heck they charged a few hundred dollars to replace an NVR that was under warranty.
Yes I realize there are remote dealer arrangements and I had a great experience with that so far. People here are awesome. But this is a forum, not a support arrangement. It is done by dealers with integrity because they know how screwed up the whole arrangement can be with some dealer and customer combinations. When stuff is under warranty remote support isn't always the right choice for various reasons.
And nor is that much of a warranty from the place I bought it from who can determine what a 1 year or 3 year warranty means. Cannot say I'd ever recommend it again because of this reason. But props to the folks here--you are all a bright spot in the arrangement.

Ron want's what he wants, there's nothing wrong with that. Crestron, RTI and URC are available options.
It's great to be loyal and spokesman for the brand, but it does have UI limitations, and for those that want custom to their specifications Control4 is not the right solution.
Some folks want fighter pilot design where they have control over every function possible.
Other folks just want to start it up and let it go.

Then Control4 isn't for you. This level of customization will never be possible and sorry that interface is dated.

What I have noticed, is if your system is setup right the first time, you wont be needing to call your dealer every day/week/month. With HE and when-then.... the customer does get a lot of flexibility with their system.
