XBMC rewrite

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Some of you have already utilised my XBMC driver in the past. As this was my first driver it was written extremely poorly and as such it was plagued with architectural issues which limited it from expansion into features i wanted to include.

Long story cut short i have spent some time rewriting my media player architecture so that i can churn out media players easily. As such you will see several media player drivers announced by Recluse AV in the coming few weeks.

In the meantime i wanted to excite you guys by listing the new features of the Recluse AV XBMC driver. Note that this driver is not a free driver and is charged on a per project basis.

The XBMC Media Player driver offers the following

* IP based communications

* Transport Controls

* Audio End Point assignment - Volume Up/Down/Set/Mute control

* Video End Point assignment

* Play Videos from Control4's Navigator

* 2 way Feedback via JSON for play, pause, stop, finished and start

* HTTP Basic Authentication integration (XBMC web server username and password)

* Samba Authentication integration (Control4 Network File Storage username and password)

* Assignable buttons for non intuitive buttons

* Wake on Lan functionality

* Power off options

* Ability to send custom messages to XBMC via XBMC Notification (like Control4 Announcements on Navigator)

There will be an official announcement when Recluse AV announces its driver website.

Alan - great work again! Is it possible to edit the controls to make the skip forward 5sec and skip forward 10min assigned to either the fast forward or skip forward buttons or assigning those buttons to the up arrow/right arrow on the sr250? does that make sense? If you watch a movie on a pc, the keyboard arrow keys do these functions...

thx,

tum

Hi guys,

Any sneek previews as to which media players will be supported? ;)

BTW, one of the forum members is after your boxee driver, but doesn't know how to get it because you don't list your email.... :)

For you Alex no problems. We are doing XBMC, Boxee, Dune. We were looking into the Neo550 but decided that it pales in comparision to the other solutions so never went through with it.

Currently it is a bit difficult to take international orders as Australian law dictates that we have to get credit card details via a secure gateway if it is via the web (or so our accounts team say). We can however take phone or fax orders however.

Our web developer is currently modifying our website to meet the gateway requirements (ie online shop). This should be up and running in the coming weeks.

Our contact details can be found on our website.

Out of interest, is it going to, or would it be possible for control4 to be aware of things like starting, stopping, pausing and other events which aren't controlled by C4 itself. I've got an ipad controller (XBMC commander) which knocks spots of anything C4 has in terms of media control, but obviously there's no firing of events in C4.

Also, is it possible to access the media information stored within the XBMC library. C4 is pretty poor on it's media management, mine is configured to be used under XBMC with film sets, tv series etc. etc. which just don't work well in control4. If you could get all that nailed then put me in the queue to buy!

To answer your questions

1). Yes it combines the http api and json Apis to provide two way feedback on events. This means that selection of media whether by control4, any 3rd party interface or xbmc itself will trigger a media started event. Same with pause, resume, stop or media ended events.

2) I would love to do this in the long term but it is not in the next release.

I want to also notify you of another cool feature which i use alot of. I have added xbmc notifications into control4. Think announcements but without interrupting your movie.

Thanks Alan for getting back to me so quickly. Shame about the video management, it's proving to be a real pain getting the media into control4 in any sort of useful way. Unfortunately though until control4 picks up it's game in relation to media management I'm going to end up switching to another app to control media playback. Your json event listener would help with this a lot, but it's a shame the media management is lacking in control4. I don't want to sound like I'm moaning, most of what c4 does is great, just feel they're a long way behind in this area.
