Temperature & Humidity Sensor For Inside Freezer

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a good solution for a temp & humidity sensor that integrates into Control4 and can be used outdoors (weather resistant) or in a freezer (can handle cold temperatures).

Unfortunately my Shelly H&T Gen 3's are not rated for temperatures below freezing.

Why not a Control4 Z2C with a probe?   I’ve got these all over the place and work great.  The probe wire can be bought at c4 too.  native zigbee and works fantastic in all cases we’ve put them in.

I use a single z2c in my garage to detect, garage temperature, freezer temp and if the freezer door had been left open.

So the Z2C would sit outside the freezer, than you have a wire running from the Z2C into the freezer?

@Cinegration how do you get the probe/wire into the freezer? Do you just run between the chest and lid and the gasket still seals? Or drill a hole through the wall of the freezer and hope for the best? 🫣

If you’ve got a half decent Zigbee mesh I’d suggest Sinope moisture sensors which have temperature sensors built in, just put it in the freezer, I believe they can measure down to -18C

The battery life is roughly 4-6x that of a Z2C

Can you provide a link to the Sinope product you are suggesting?  Is this the product you are suggesting?

The wire is very small and we were able to get it through the seal in the corner.  This also allowed us to get a door contact on the door itself and the Garage Temperature all from one unit :).

We mounted the Z2C on the outside of the unit... FYI, no matter what you do, use a battery operated device... because if you lose power to your freezer you also lose power to your sensor.  Learned that the hard way lol :)

That’s the one however you need the version which works with C4 so you’d have to work with your dealer to get them for you

We’ve done dozens of fridges and freezers with them, zero issues and excellent battery life.

Do these water detectors providing temperature and relative humidity readings or just temperature?

Interesting that it works in a freezer.  Specs say:

Temperature ranges:
Operating temperature: 0 °C to 40 °C (32 °F to 104 °F)
Storage: -20 °C to 50 °C (-4 °F to 122 °F)

The LEAD/PROBE goes in the freezer: the device does not. I wouldn't suggest putting the actual device in.

I also suspect you'd get no signal from it, regardless of how strong your mesh is....

1) This particular model does not even come with a leader / probe.  Even if it did, I would not be OK with the wire being sandwiched between the gasket and fridge/freezer.

2) I currently have an Ambient Weather station set up in all my fridge / freezers.  It consists of a base unit (WS-8482) and 6 wireless sensors (TX-3110B).  It communicates with the base station via 915mhz frequency and works great from inside my fridges and freezers.  Only problem with this setup is I cannot integrate it into Control4.  https://www.amazon.ca/WS-8482-X3-7-Channel-Monitoring-Temperature-Compatible/dp/B07CCGNH47

I assumed you meant the one with lead (S version) - and a lead, if thin enough shouldn't be an issue at all, and the Z2IO or battery sensor lead is so thin it could be fed THROUGH the seal, which can then be sealed back up with a drop of sealant no problem.

And I'm not surprised a long range 900 or so Mhz frequency might penetrate, but zigbee is 2.4Mhz and low power by design.

Is there no way to get data from the Ambient Weather API into C4?  The Ambient Weather API seems to be published.  Perhaps you could use something like the Generic TCP driver to pull a value with a HTTP command?

@msgreenf Is this doable?

Currently the Control4 Weather Driver just shows the temperature based on my geographical location.  It does not seem to be updating the system with the BASE UNIT or REMOTE SENSOR readings.  Is there any way to fix this?

I still can't help you. I don't understand your question

The driver is showing the temperature for my City based on my postal code.

I want it to show the temperature of the actual weather station (WS-8482) and sensors (TX-3110B) placed around my house.

You need to change it to use weather underground vs just the control4 weather service in the properties

Just tried.  After I change it to "WU" and click "Set" some new options show up briefly (1/2 second) at the bottom but then it reverts back to Control4 and those additional options disappear.

Maybe this can only be done via Composer Pro?

Nope. Then your weather underground API key isn't valid
