Greg-MM AndroidTV driver on Github - anyone still using it successfully?

Recommended Posts

I am considering your driver.  It seems like a bit of a workaround as you have to install that other Zank app as well.  Is that because Google makes it hard to directly interface with AndroidTV?

Can this be used with multiple AndroidTV devices.  Right now I have a Chromecast for GoogleTV, a Mibox3 and I am getting some onn 4k pro devices.

@Andrew luecke I downloaded your driver in hope I could use it to power on and off my TCL television. I installed the Zank Remote app on my television and phone and it worked. I then installed one of the drivers I thought might work, Chromecast with Google TV. The driver found my television and It controlled curser movements but power on or off did nothing. I don't see on or off power listed in the documentation but they are in Composer. Is power control not available?

I am sure that Andrew will reply, but when you look at the docs for this driver it says: "The Chowmain Android TV driver is designed to control Google Android TV boxes.".  So it was not designed to control all of the TV functionality, the main additions required would be power and input switching.  For Roku there was a different driver for Roku boxes vs Roku TVs.

But I would be interested in knowing this as well.

It sure can, but one thing to note: it will not only not work well for TVs, it won't work well for TV PROVIDER boxes either. It'll control the underlying android and functions OK (provided you can access the store app or side load) but the functions for most 'cable TV' functions aren't in android - so there's no guide, channel up down numerical button links etc. (Note that I'm talking about PROVIDER custom app devices, not things like Sling etc apps that should work fine as they're designed not to use those specific commands to begin with)

Sorry for the delay (we were at CEDIA) It's not designed for Actual TV's running Android. Only Dongles (and the Chromecast with Google TV). All of our drivers have a 90 day trial if you wish to test

There's advantages to both approaches. Whilst I didn't write the driver (Alan did), the biggest advantage of the app I assume would be that we abstract the protocol we use for communication away from the device. So it's less likely the driver will break on Google upgrades.  It's a lot easier to update the app on the media player device than the Control4 hardware, and it makes it easier to provide a variety of protocols you can use.

I've made a pull request on his github with the changes I used to fix it on my end.

https://github.com/Greg-MM/C4-AndroidTV/pull/14

You can wait to see if he commits them, or just make the same changes to the files in the driver you have downloaded.
