Apple TV Driver Differences

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

I am looking to integrate an Apple TV into my Control4 system. I have a gen4 Apple TV HD. I have heard there have been issues with the IP integration because of non-matching email addresses and Apple Home stuff. What are the major differences between the "Gen 1-3" IP driver and the "Gen 4 and 4k" driver? Worst case scenario I can use IR but that is not ideal. Also does the process for integration vary between the two?

Thanks for the help!

The Geh 1-3 IP driver only works via IP on older Apple TVs, if they are Gen4 or 4k then it can only be used for IR control.  As others have said, use the Gen 4 driver if you want the best functionality, it has been pretty reliable for me as of late...however IR is bulletproof if you don't need voice control and as long as the IR doesn't fall off the box or the cable come loose...

Thanks for the feedback! For using the newer IP Driver, does the Control4 account have to be on the same email as the Apple ID? I've heard of a few issues with this, as it goes through HomeKit. Just wondering the limitations during set up for this option.

apple tv and you need another apple device (iphone, iPad) on the same iCloud account with the Control4 app loaded on that device.  I don't believe the Control4 account needs to use the same email.

Control4 does not need to be on the same email as the AppleID. I use one AppleID for 2 systems on 2 different control4 systems (with 2 different Control4 email addresses).

I have used the Apple Bridge driver since it came out (a good few years ago) and it has been flawless for me (2 houses and 8 or 9 Apple TVs) with one exception where a driver update broke things and I needed to reinstall.

For the Apple Bridge Integration, does the Apple TV require a static IP address? Or does it always identify through HomeKit?

It identifies via the c4 app and integrates via homekit. No static IP is needed

I have seen this if you have the Apple bridge driver installed but not an Apple TV driver. I've also seen this when the Apple home app is not installed on the phone or wayne. The Apple ID on the phone is not the same as on the Apple TV
