Installing Airport Express for airplay

I need some help while I wait on my dealer.  I asked to have something for my daughter to play her music from her iphone to our C4 system.  He told me to get a AE and he will set it up.  I just upgraded to an ea-3 and still have a HC200 and 300 in the system but he ran out of time on the day he installed the ea-3.  8 zone amp with wired ceiling speakers.  I just got composer HE and have been using it to learn more about my system.  I'm a beginner though so keep that in mind.  What I don't understand is how the AE is connected to the system.  Is it hardwired?  To what?  Is there a driver for this.  Dealer mentioned he builds his own? Its the one addition I don't really get.  I assume its part of the network.  I already have a bunch of airport extremes and timecapsule throughout my house.  I have read through the forum and can't find anything that are in layman terms for a dummy like me.  I would just like to have it in place and have a better understanding when my guy gets back here whenever that is.

Cheers

I don't know how the AE's work, but assuming that you have Shairbridge drivers installed on the EA3 then you daughter would just click the Airplay button from the Apple Music app or Devices Available from Spotify and select the name of the Shairbridge driver.  If it is set up correctly the amp/etc should turn on and start playing in a second or two.  There is nothing for you to do in this instance in Composer HE.

If they aren't already installed you can't install the Shairbridge drivers but your dealer could do that remotely.  There would likely be a separate Shairbridge driver for each room that has an audio endpoint.

Playing music from your iOS device Using Control4 ShairBridge™ (available on select system controllers), you can stream music from your own iOS smartphone or tablet. Even guests can stream music to your home! To stream music from your iOS device:

1 Make sure your Apple device (an iOS device running iOS 8.0 or later or other devices running iTunes 12 or later) is compatible with AirPlay.

2 Connect your iOS device and your AirPlay device to the same WiFi or Ethernet network.

3 On your iOS device, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access Control Center.

4 Tap AirPlay.

5 Tap the name of the device you want to stream content to

Shairbridge is definitely the right option here - no need to use additional hardware.

But, if for some reason you go ahead with the Airport Express, you would use the apple set up app to add the device to your network.

You would then hard wire it to your system by connection the AE output to the EA input - from memory this can be done using digital Optical or by 3.5m to RCA.

The device would then be added to your project by the dealer - probably by using an audio option like a CD Player or like.

The dealer then binds the driver to the EA audio input and renames it to 'Airport Express' or what ever you like.

You can then select it from the listen menu for any room which allows digital music.

But again... forget all that and get your dealer to add Shairbridge for each room you use digital music in.

I switched off my AE the day I upgraded from 2.5.2 to 2.9.1......... Do you want to buy an AE?

IMO, Time to look for a new dealer.

No, my dealer is a wonderful guy.  Just very busy, two jobs and 4 kids.  I'm okay with that. I'm retired.  I never pressure him.  He will show up.

I agreee with all the earlier comments on ShairBridge. I have two airport expresses that I used before Shairbrige was introduced. Since the advent of ShairBridge, they have become paper weights!

Not saying he isn't wonderful, just not knowledgeable about the products he sells.  I haven't used an Apple Airport in a system for at least 2-3 years.

Control4's Shairbridge is used to airplay audio only from a device.

If the requirement of having to airplay audio and video becomes needed, then you would install an AppleTV to your display and airplay to that.

Shairbridge was never meant to be used with video, at all, so can certainly see why things don't sync up like you're expressing.

Okay, all of you guys were correct.  Shairbridge works great and was simple to install.  Had it installed everyone loves it.  I can't compare to the AE as never seen it in play.  I can't beleive you guys let me take the AE out of the box so I can't return it!  Wait, what!  Lol.  I knew I should have listened to you all.  Thanks again.
