Comcast/Xfinity IP control

Recommended Posts

Im a dealer and typically use IR on cable boxes for reliability. Today had a Comcast X4 box that has been giving lots of issues with IR control for the last few weeks. Didnt matter where we moved the IR emitter it would eventually start missing commands.

Gave up and said ill use the IP driver since its a compatible box. The setup is really annoying.

I also had the issue where after following the steps the IP address and MAC were empty. Figured I would just get the MAC from the back of the box and look it up on my router to get IP.

Looked for the MAC on my router and it wasnt there... Yet the ethernet port was working.

Finally took a while and figured it out. In the SETUP menu of the box youll see something that says device or similar. In there youll see 3 MAC addresses. They are showing the IPV6 address. None of them will correspond with the MAC on the rear of the unit.

Found out the actual address was the eSTB MAC -1 on the last digit. So if the eSTB MAC is 11:11:11:11:11:12  the actual MAC will be 11:11:11:11:11:11

Once I figured that out I was able to reserve the IP on my router and finish the setup in composer. The driver is much faster than the IR one.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the additional info for those trying to get it setup.

Sorry the IP driver is a pain to setup.  Fortunately, it seems to be pretty much rock solid if you can get the IP setup working.

Friends, there has been an Xfinity IP Driver for well over a year - closer to two years. You would see this listed as Xfinity IP in their database. You would also see, in the Notes section of the driver, the cable boxes that allow this, and how to activate the cable boxes ethernet ports. Do your diligence

Yes, thank you for that wonderful 1st post!  Welcome to the community.

If you read above you'll see that some of these boxes are doing weird things because of IPV6... My new XG1v4 is having the same issue as described above, I'll be digging into it a bit more today...

These boxes act very strange on the network...  Originally my Unifi network was assigning the box a DHCP address, though as others have figured out that address wasn't showing up in the diagnostic/setup menu of the box.  I was thus able to set-up a static address in my Unifi and the box eventually grabbed that address... Now the xg1v4 shows up and falls off the network all the time, though it continues to be controllable on the assigned IP address.   The box will even show up in my unifi controller, without an IP address.

I gave up on STB ip control after Directv screwed me by constantly messing up the control of their boxes with updates.

I've been on the Xfinity IP driver since its release about 1.5 years ago... Its been rock solid stable and considerably faster then IR... Only reason I'm having any issue right now is I've got a new box and firmware seems to have a minor glitch that just makes it a bit confusing.

  • 2 weeks later...

I also am stuck - when I do step 2 in the setup instructions the IP address and MAC are blank or show as unknown, but it shows as enabled.

I have tried to reboot the STB and have repeated the process multiple times.

I have tried to search my connected devices on my Netgear router and another LAN scanner I have - No comcast box.

Anyone have any ideas?

The STB and Router/Switch activity lights are active and blinking?

To find mine I unplugged it from the lan then plugged it back in and looked for a device with only a min or so of uptime.  You can also find the mac address on the box or in the setup menu where you turn on the IP control and try to match the MAC address...

It took some time but the box finally stabilized on my network and has been working flawlessly again.
