Door station height

Bullseye

My apologies, the below was an error and should have been 4'8" to 5' for the bottom, I mistakenly forgot to subtract the difference between the bottom of the unit to the cam. Did not notice this until later on.

Bottom of the box at about 5' to 5'6". You want the camera aimed at about the middle of the average person's face - add about 6" from bottom of box to the camera itself,

I'd place the bottom the unit at the 4 ft. mark.  The camera angle is generous and you don't want the push-button too high.

Not unfair - it also sort of depends on how far away from the 'standing' location the unit will be. If that distance is going to be more than 2f, then yes you'll want to drop that unit down a bit.

It's not an argument as such.  There are certain "standard" ways of building depending, to some extent, on locale.  Just like light switch placement, a doorbell is expected at a certain height above the standing grade.  I've heard the argument that the camera may or may not be suitable for a given location but that is not to say one should place it outside of the norm.

I think anyone smart enough to go through the process of construction can use an extended protractor to determine placement of the camera.  if it's not going to work, don't make the purchase.

Not an argument yet you're trying to make one? If you're talking Neca-1 standards for intercom, that doesn't apply to/take into consideration video stations - let alone a specific device such as a door station.

OP: below's the extract direct from the install manual from c4. Use that as your norm. There is no set height for these things from control4. Most door stations with video use roughly the same instructions and if they give height measurements it tends to range from 55" to 65" or 1400mm to 1650 mm for the height of the camera itself. The C4 back box is 6.142 inches high, the camera sits at roughly 2/3 of that once installed.

a
Mount the Door Station where the video
camera is aimed at an average person’s
height so the person inside the building gets
a good view of the person calling in.
b
Mount the Door Station so that the caller
can comfortably speak into the microphone
(about two (2) feet away or 60 cm).

Nowif you ARE going to be quite a bit further away it makes sense to LOWER the location, as you're better off catching more of the person (and possibly better catching children etc) then more of the air above them.

Of course you would also put it lower if you're expecting lots scantily dressed women or men, whatever your fancy, and prefer to stare at their chest region instead of their face. :o

But why is your wife ringing your own doorbell? ;)  I said 55" as the lowest, not 5'5" by the way.

I'm just letting you know what most camera door-stations spec, I've installed quite a few and have manuals stored on my laptop. Those that give measurements at all range in the numbers given. Keep in mind that unlike having a full cam at your front door, the intention of video intercom is generally to talk face to face. It's why I prefer to have a normal cam at the front door too begin with.

Bottom of the biz at 5.5'?!? My wife is 5' 2". She'd have to reach over her head to push the button.

And for those watching in black and white.  55 inches is about 4'6"

Or it would be an exact 4 feet 7 inches? B)

To add that is CAMERA height. Yes I just noticed I went with bottom of box at 5 feet to 5'6, which was wrong, I forgot to take off the 4-6 inches for the cam - I've edited that orignal post to reflect that. Sorry for the confusion there.
